Project
The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is one of the largest museums of Greece and the most prominent museum in Northern Greece. It houses antiquities from the prehistoric period up to the latter hellenistic years, presented in a human-centered exhibition with a strong educational focus.
The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki commissioned us to do a complete redesign of the museum's website, aiming to modernize the communicational presence of the institution and effectively promote its multidimensional contribution.
Information Architecture
One of the major goals of the website redesign was to offer useful and usable content to all visitors. We analyzed extensively all informational content, the needs of the visitors, the multidimensional activity of the Museum as well as the communication priorities, presenting our findings in wireframe form. This approach allowed us to prioritize and evaluate different approaches in time, before moving to the design stage.
Design
The color palette was based on gold, the construction material of the most famous exhibits of the museum. The design was inspired by the diagonal lines characterizing the iconic museum building. We placed special emphasis in an easy to read font and in the dominance of the exhibits.
EXHIBITIONS
The permanent exhibitions of the museum are presented in a structured narrative format, extending the experience of a visit to the actual museum grounds. We complement the permanent exhibitions with the new sections "Our Highlights" and "Exhibit of the Month", emphasizing both the most famous exhibits as well as the hidden treasures of the museum.
Extroversion
The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is characterized by great extroversion, with continuous events targeted at various audiences. We categorized and unified the different ecents, offering both a complete calendar as well as separate event notifications in the sub-sections of the website.
