Project
Every Can Counts is a european program that aims to raise public awareness about aluminium can recycling. BCME, European Aluminium and Alupro, the institutions behind the Every Can Counts initiative, comissioned Point Blank and UCME the design and development of a Facebook campaign for this purpose. The campaign took place simultaneously in all 9 european coutries where ECC is active.
We designed and developed the game #OlympiCan, the Recycling Champion. In the game, aluminium can recycling is an olympic sport, where the athlete runs, jumps over obstacles and collects more and more cans.
The approach
Combining interactive technologies and creative storytelling with a social network, we created a gaming experience alongside with implementing a facebook contest. A game where you can play either in desktop, tablet or a mobile phone. The application is translated in all 9 languages of the countries that participate in the contest.
Aim
The aim of the campaign was to create a game for increasing public awareness about environmental issues and more specifically recycling aluminum. The game should be easy to use and provide keyboard and touch screen controls in a unified way. An additional goal was to implement a simple game that can be completed by players of any gaming experience, while also motivating the player to replay it for a better score.
Rio Olympic Games
Our basic goal was to connect the game effectively with the Olympic Games of Rio. Thus the concept was based on a variation of obstacle racing. The player must avoid obstacles and gather as many tins as possible before the finish line. The tins are not treated as garbage, but on the contrary, they are coveted as they offer precious points.
The competition
The players try to recycle as many tin cans as possible in order to enter the draw and win the presents of the competition, among which a bicycle made of 100% recycled tin cans stands out.
FACEBOOK CAMPAIGN
To increase the visibility of the game and create a social media 'buzz' around it, we created facebook posts adapted for each discrete country, using the best practices of copyright and visual production for each language.
Design
The typography and the color palete of the project was based on the existing visual identity of the initiative Every Can Counts. For the illustration and the game interface we chose flat design aesthetics, a minimalist approach based on simple forms with contemporary digital character. The design of the landscapes, the main character as well as the character animation was created in collaboration with the artist Charoula Adamopoulou.
Technology
The application was created using HTML 5 Canvas based on the CreateJS suite of libraries for interactive programming. The desktop users are directed to the Facebook environment to play the game, while smartphone/tablet users are offered the standalone version as Facebook does not offer apps for these devices.
